5 Hidden Signs Your Jewelry Needs Repair Immediately

1. Worn-Down or Split Prongs

Prongs are the small metal claws that hold your center stone secure. Over years of wear, gold prongs wear down and flatten out. If a prong catches on fabrics or appears rounded and flat, it is at risk of snapping off. We can retip or rebuild prongs on-site to keep your stone secure.

2. The 'Tap Test' for Loose Diamonds

Hold your ring close to your ear and tap it gently with your fingernail. If you hear a faint clicking sound, it means the center stone is loose in its setting. Bring it in immediately for tightening.

3. Stretched or Cracking Gold Links

Heavy gold chains and bracelets stretch over time as links rub against each other. If you notice thin areas or cracks forming on individual links, solder them immediately to prevent the chain from breaking.

4. Worn Clasp Springs

Lobster claws and spring ring clasps rely on tiny internal steel springs. If your clasp does not snap shut instantly or stays slightly open, the spring is failing and the clasp needs replacement.
